Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is cheap, flat, and easy to machine — which explains its popularity in furniture and interior fit-outs. 2. Moisture: MDF's Fatal Weakness
MDF acts like a sponge. Exposed to water or sustained humidity, it swells — permanently. The fibres separate, the panel loses all structural integrity, and there is no way to reverse the damage. Even "moisture-resistant" MDF (often green-tinted) only delays the inevitable; it does not prevent it.

Standard MDF uses urea-formaldehyde resin, which off-gasses formaldehyde — a known carcinogen — for months or years after installation. Even low-emission MDF continues to release small amounts. In enclosed spaces with limited ventilation (common in Saudi Arabia's sealed, air-conditioned buildings), this poses a real health risk.

MDF has legitimate uses: painted decorative panels, routed signage, prototype furniture, and budget interior fit-outs where longevity is not a concern. But for any application requiring structural strength, moisture resistance, fire safety, or long-term durability in Saudi Arabia, plywood is the correct specification.
